The obvious reason is that we need more money to continue to operate. As you know, any organization has certain expenses that must be met. We also employ a legislative consultant and are responsible for her salary. The Illinois Farm Bureau has been and continues to be extremely generous in their support of Extension Partners. ILFB does our mailings, hosts our conference calls and provides legal counsel for us as in-kind support of University of Illinois Extension. But we need more memberships to cover the added costs of dealing with the current crisis in funding on top of our general budget, which includes our legislative consultant as well as expenses such as post office box, organizational registration fees, licenses, etc.
In addition to the financial needs of a not-for-profit organization, we need numbers. The more members we have throughout Illinois, the more credibility Extension Partners has as an advocacy group. Legislators are interested in how many people support an issue. The more members we have, the more the members of the Illinois General Assembly will listen to what we tell them about the impact Extension has on the citizens of this state.
Therefore, I am asking you to join Extension Partners now. If you are already a member, and many of you have been loyal members for years, thank you! Anyone who cares about what University of Illinois Extension does can join, so please tell others about our need for membership.
